OSHA 1910.179 (j) - Inspections

Under 1910.179 (j) the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires inspections to be completed on all lifting systems and/or the below the hook components. This is to include but not limited to items like sling, beam clamp, shackles, spreader beams, etc... The subjections under 1910.179(j) detail out the regulations and standards to be followed to keep you compliant.

Overhead systems to include but not limited to overhead bridge cranes, overhead gantry (including roll around shop gantries), workstations, column and pedestal jib cranes, monorails, traveling and/or station area hoist, traveling hoist trolleys, etc...

OSHA requires that frequent inspections be completed daily to monthly intervals and periodic inspections are completed every 1 to 12 months with a minimum of 1 per year.

There is so much more to inspections than just meeting OSHA requirements. For Q2 Engineered Systems & Technology our biggest goal behind inspections is to minimize the risk of accident and possible injury and/or death to your personnel. We want your people to go home to their families at the end of every day and return to work the next day for you. This starts with ensuring the equipment they work with is safe to make that happen. Inspections allow you to know the condition of your equipment. Wear and tear even from good safe use still accrues. By conducting your inspections, we're able to conduct preventative maintenance, and address issues on the horizon before they cause you failure, to minimize if not prevent down time.

Frequent Inspections
Frequent inspections are to be conducted on a regular base and starts with the operators conducting a simple daily inspection prior to operating the overheads at every shift. This simple inspection (check list) is to check visually that the system doesn't have anything out of place, is operating properly, and there aren't any out of the ordinary concerns from the prior shift usage.

As there are companies and facilities that take it upon themselves to have their maintenance teams conduct a monthly inspection, there are also those that simply rely on the annual inspections to be enough to keep them running.

If you are running a 2nd or even a 3rd shift you are running at least 2 or 3 times as much than the company next door simply running a single shift. IF you are working with high corrosive products, located out by the ocean with the salt air, hard pressing your capacity on a normal base, run on a constant level only resting the equipment for breaks, lunch, and shift change then you should be looking at having your overheads looked over on a frequent base. The consideration of monthly inspections. We will visually inspect all aspects of each system, inspect functionality of limits, wire ropes/chains, hooks and give a full functional run through.
Periodic Inspection services & Annual OSHA Compliant inspections
Periodic inspections are required at a minimum of once a year, but is recommended more frequently depending on the operation at your facility.

As stated in the above section (frequent inspections) there are reasons to conduct inspections outside the minimum requirements OSHA mandates annually for your overhead systems. Each facility is its own, workloads, number of shifts, etc... create individualism between companies and locations within a single company. However, they all require services to keep your overhead cranes running safely and efficiently for your operators. These programs help to keep repairs to a minimum or at the very least stay on preventative repairs to avoid down time. These services can also be completed more often than annually but not as frequent as monthly by going on a quarterly, or semi-annual program if needed based on the usage given to your overhead systems. Quarterly or Semi-Annual services will entail 1 designated annual inspection & preventive maintenance service, followed with scheduled visual and function inspection along with added preventative maintenance
